Murray Raney Award
Since 1992, Grace Chattanooga has sponsored
the Murray Raney Award for contribution in the use of sponge metal catalysts
in organic synthesis.
The Organic Reactions Catalysis Society's
(ORCS) Executive Committee approved the formation of the Murray Raney
Award with the first award going to Stewart Montgomery of W.R. Grace in 1992.
Mr. Jefferson D. Herring assisted in
the establishment of this
award.
ORCS was formed over 38 years ago by a group
of people who shared an interest in using catalyst for organic synthesis. The
influence of ORCS has grown into an international
organization with tremendous cross fertilization. At the sixteenth
conference (held in 1996) nearly half of the papers originated outside of the
United States.
This year's Murray
Raney Award was presented to Professor Jean Lessard at the
ORCS Conference held on March 21 - 25, 2004 in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Professor Lessard is Director of the Center for Electrochemistry and
Electrocatalysis, University of Sherbrooke, Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada.

Professor Jean Lessard receives the 2004
Murray Raney Award by Dr. Steve Schmidt
